Financial assistance for renovations in Quebec: where to start

Provincial, federal and municipal grants: what exists, how to know if you qualify, and the mistake that costs the most.

The mistake that cancels everything

Most programs require you to apply, or to have your assessment done, before work begins. A job already underway is a rejected file, no matter how eligible you were. Before you sign anything, check the order of steps for the program you're interested in.

Energy efficiency

Rénoclimat is the starting point for insulation, windows and doors, heating and ventilation. An energy assessment is done before the work and a second one after, and the amount you receive depends on the measured gains. Chauffez vert covers replacing an oil-fired system with an electric or renewable source. Hydro-Québec also runs its own energy efficiency program.

Basement, drainage and sewer backup

This is the least known stream, and often the most worthwhile. Many Quebec municipalities subsidize part of the cost of installing a backflow prevention valve, and sometimes a foundation drain inspection. Amounts and conditions vary from one city to the next. Look up your municipality's program before starting any plumbing work in the basement.

Based on your situation

RénoRégion is aimed at low-income homeowners outside major centres whose home needs major repairs. Éconologis offers free energy efficiency support to low-income households during the cold season. Federal programs for energy efficient renovation also exist.

Three habits that protect your file

Keep all your itemized invoices, with the contractor's name and RBQ (Régie du bâtiment du Québec) licence number. Several programs require a licensed contractor and reject undeclared work. Ask for written quotes before choosing: they're as useful for comparison as they are for building your assistance application.

Amounts and eligibility criteria change regularly. Always confirm the details with the program itself before committing to any expense.
